Picturesque town of Volendam
I am a self-proclaimed Nederlandophile (we are going to pretend this is a real term). I am seriously obsessed with Holland and all things Dutch. I am one of those strange people who even like the language that seems like they are constantly clearing their throat. I find it charming even. Last year, I was lucky enough to take a little road trip in my beloved country. While I find charm in just about everything in Holland, I seriously felt like I had been dropped straight into a fairytale when visiting Volendam. While some may argue the authenticity of this place, I don’t care if it is like Disneyland because I loved it.
Volendam is in North Holland about a 45 minute train ride from Amsterdam. It is seen as a typical Dutch fishing town. While I believe Volendam is picturesque and quite appealing, there are many who cannot get the bad taste out of their mouth from the main reason many people come to visit. The typical Dutch costume. That’s right, people flock to Volendam to dress up and take their pictures wearing wooden shoes, ridiculous hats, and suspenders. This is quite kitschy, I do understand, but don’t let that hold you back from seeing the beauty of Volendam.
Embracing the tourist traps…me as a Dutch housewife
I visited during the winter and as Volendam is situated next to a giant lake, the weather was overcast and gray. This, however, did not put a halt to the awesomeness. I was with someone who had lived his whole life in Holland and never came to Volendam. While it is seen to be very touristy, I think he was just as excited as I was.
Perfectly Dutch
The town is filled with little Dutch houses—some shockingly small and making wonder if elves lived inside. The marina is home to wooden Dutch fishing boats. Walking around the shops and grabbing some Dutch snacks are a perfect way to spend the day in Volendam.
You have to try a herring!!
Why yes, I can agree that it can be a little over the top in Dutchness (clearly not an issue for me). However, I think it is a fun day trip and makes for some pretty sweet pictures.
